Fuhai Met Mast

Fuhai Meteorological Tower - Offshore Met Mast

INTRODUCTION

The Fuhai Meteorological Tower is the first offshore meteorological tower in Taiwan, located 8Km offshore in the Changhua area.
Since its contruction and commissioning in 2015, TOWSC has carried out multiple project maintenance operations:
❶  Above-water structure maintenance
❷ Wind turbine installation
❸ Solar panel installation
❹ Supervisory Control and Data Aquisition (SCADA) installation.
❺ Underwater structural maintenance (Underwater basic maintenance)
❻ Instrument and power system maintenance (Data transmission and processing, Wind direction and Anemometer maintenance, Power System tests, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
❼ Control center management (Environmental safety quality and document management)
❽ Monitoring Security

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The MetMast gathers weather data over a determined period and when enough is collected, it is sent to the recieving station and weather professionals or enthusiasts from AIC would be able to access and convert the raw data into visual data such as graphs or a compass rose to reveal very impressive behaviours of the weather throughout that time period. This in turn will be able to give us a good perspective for future weather forecasting and operation planning. Please see a few examples.

ACADAMIA-INDUSTRIAL COOPERATION(AIC)

Since 2012, TOWSC has proactively initiated 19 Academic Industry Corporations with domestic institutes to facilitate the academia development of the offshore industry.
To serve the purposes of data aquisition and data analysis, TOWSC went into collaboration in 2017 with Universities and Research Facilities in Taiwan which include the following but are not limited to: NTU, NCKU, NTOU, NCCU, NCTU, and NCHC.
Along with the AIC, TOWSC and related parties currently jointly work together in the research and study of related fields to help develop key technologies and technology transfer.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE & PROJECT

TOWSC is undertaking the maintenance of Fuhai Met Mast, including strategic planning, electrical system set-up, inspection and maintenance, equipment maintenance management, personnel and vessel management, contract management, subcontractor interface, data collection and analysis…etc.
Met Mast are now to undergo system upgrades for more accurate weather data readings and power efficiency. With the collaboration with NCKU, the project installed wind speed measurement instruments include the Taiwan Space Agency(TASA)'s Wind Hunter Satellite (TRITON) 's Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) on the Fuhai Met Mast for receiving signals, and a wavemeter.
